Tomorrow night, August 31, 2010 at 8 p.m., Dave Eggers and real-life protagonist Valentino Achak Deng will be at Sens Restaurant showing the progress of the high school being built in Marial Bai, as well as an update on the general state of affairs in the Southern Sudan. The Marial Bai high school is the first of many projects started by the Valentino Achak Deng Foundation (VAD), an entity founded by both Valentino and Eggers and funded by donations and the proceeds from the sales of What Is the What.
What Is the What is the story of the survival of Valentino and many of his compatriots through the civil war that ripped Sudan apart in the 1990s and first half of the aughts.
