In the interest of full disclosure, I have neither read The Magicians nor the Harry Potter books (save your cheers or indignation for the comments). So I guess I can’t tell you what did or did not take place in any of them. But the reviews of The Magicians by Lev Grossman do seem to suggest that Harry Potter was a bit of a teetotaling abstinent bore. For example, the Amazon.com review tells us:
Mixing the magic of beloved children’s fantasy classics (from Narnia and Oz to Harry Potter and Earthsea) with the sex, excess, angst, and anticlimax of life in college and beyond, Lev Grossman’s Magicians reimagines modern-day fantasy for grownups.
Now I’m not sure if a story about an adult magician really translates for me into adult literature, but this book does seem to have found a pretty large audience: and at least one reader on the 6 Parnassus. Anyone else out there read or see this book around?
